1 out of 5 stars Bad for uneven surfaces   October 29, 2009

I used it on the basement wall. I put three coats and the surface barely holds magnets.
It is very bad to be used as primer for the white board paint.

I Decided to use it to make a magnetic side of a entertainment center (just the top portion). I put about 15 coats and never got it to actually hold a magnet. I called rustolium, they were very helpful. told me to sand it, add more coats, which I did but still didn't work. Don't waste your money. By the way I did stir it over and over and over again.

A can of this magnetic primer will go a long way. It's easy to apply. I decided to make a chalkboard. I painted 5 coats of this stuff on and it still doesn't make magnets stick. I should have glued a piece of metal to the board, it would have picked up the magnets a lot better. It was an extremely expensive investment that failed.

If you read the can, it addresses only 2-3 coats. The fact is, you need to use more than that. I used different width painters tape, taped off a decorative 3x4 (approx) space and the used the entire can. Every hour or so, I'd add another coat. When I'd used the entire can and let it dry/cure for 2 days, I then applied 2 good coats of chalkboard paint over the top. My magnets stick even with those two coats over the top of the magnetic primer. I think that anyone who approaches this product thinking it's going to have the same magnetic hold as the side of their fridge is delusional. LOL It's a craft kind of thing...not an industrial kind of thing. I would suggest Rare Earth magnets, although our other magnets stick just fine. Now, you won't be holding up a phone book with this primer, but it DOES work....just not with only 2 or 3 coats. And we found that the more time passed, the better the magnetism was. Not sure if that's reality or our perception, but we're loving it !!

I am so sorry to say that this product is not what it is advertised to be. I followed all directions and find that the only magnets which will stick are the flat thin kind (think busines card magnet). A heavy magnet, even a strong one, will not adher. I am really dissappointed in this. I managed to hang up one piece of paper with two thin, flat magnets, until one magnet popped off. I would expect a better product at this price. Try something else, don't get your hopes up!
