Product Description Blueair is the system for people living with allergies, asthma, or other respiratorary conditions, or for anayone who wants cleaner, more breathable air. The 402 effectively purifies air in rooms as large as a365 square feet. Using patented two-stage HEPASilentTM technology, it captures % of the tiniest 0.1 micron aparticles on levael one, including allergy-provoking pollen grains, dust mites, mold spores and pet dander particles.
This same filter technology earned the larger Blueair units Best of Class ranking in independent testing of Clean Air Delivery Rates. The 402 provides comparable performance for mid-sized rooms.
Value-added features include quiet operation, low energy use, galvanized steel construction and easy maintenance: simply open the side, slide out used filters and drop in replacements every 6 months
Amazon.com Review For rooms up to 365 square feet, this air purification system features two-stage HEPASilent technology that captures 99.97-percent of 0.1 micron particles, including allergy-provoking pollen grains, dust mites, mold spores, and pet dander particles. Particles that a HEPA filter alone might miss are captured with an electrostatic charge. HEPASilent technology moves particles through an enclosed ion chamber, which attaches a charge to the particle itself. Charged particles cling more easily to the filter media, resulting in higher filter efficiency overall. Because most electrostatic air cleaners charge the filter media itself, the charge dissipates over time and renders the filter less efficient. By constantly charging incoming particles, instead of the filter, HEPASilent technology keeps on working effectively. The air purifier's HEPASilent filter technology is geared towards a more environmentally friendly design as well. Its nontoxic polypropylene filter contains millions of ultra-thin fibers that trap tiny particles as they pass through the pleats. One of the least harmful plastics for human health and the environment, polypropylene works without outgassing or shedding irritating microscopic fibers into the air. Because polypropylene is waterproof, the filter resists contamination from bacteria, viruses, and mold naturally, without chemical additives. And as used filters are discarded and decompose, the filter media converts into harmless carbon dioxide and water. Not only does the unit clean air with environmentally friendly filters, it's HEPASilent filter technology also allows for extremely quiet operation. On the lowest setting, the unit emits no more sound than a desktop computer. With its HEPASilent filter technology, particles are trapped with both mechanical and electrostatic filters so that in combination, the two filters create a filter system through which air flows freely and the fan doesn't have to work so hard. The unit's design is also geared towards quiet operation with its noise-muffling steel housing. Not only quiet, but the air purifier is energy efficient as well, using less power than a 20-watt light bulb, or 80 watts on high. The air purification system operates efficiently, quietly, as well as inoffensively. Instead of discharging a windy stream of filtered air, the unit diffuses air gently through an area six times greater than the average air cleaner. Its SurroundAir system achieves peak performance without annoying drafts by drawing in dirty air from the sides and bottom, moving it through a less dense filter media, and releasing clean, filtered air from the sides and top. Operating on its lowest setting, the system produces virtually no noticeable draft, while still providing an exceptional air exchange rate. The air purifier features a sleek, contemporary, Swedish design and is easy to use and maintain. Simply plug it in, select the speed setting, and it is ready to go, with a bright blue power "on" light to show that it's working. The grilles and powder-coated steel exterior are easy to wipe clean, and when the filter needs to be replaced (twice yearly), just open the side, slide out the old filters, and drop the new ones in. This quiet, efficient, easy-to-use air purifier measures 23 by 20 by 11 inches and carries a 10-year warranty. --Catie Unger

Well built, quiet, works well October 11, 2009 James B. Charles (New Jersey) I have always had bad allergies. I've had several HEPA filters. Based on how well this is constructed, I can imagine it may be the last HEPA filter that I purchase. It is made of galvanized steel and is solid down to the speed setting dial. Filters are of average price for a unit of this size (about $50 every 6 months).
The unit is very, very quiet. Inaudible on the low speed. I keep it on 3 which you can hear, but it moves a lot of air. 4 is loud but good for quickly cleaning up the air if necessary. Air is electrostatically charged before moving through the filter media, which I have found is a worthwhile feature for HEPA filters.
If you have pets or a smoker in the house, you can purchase replacement filters with activated charcoal at an increased cost. Another nice feature. Filters are very easy to change and it takes only seconds to replace them.
Overall, I am most impressed with how well built the unit is. Nothing else I have ever seen even comes close. Most look like toys in comparison.
Very quiet and effective air purifier July 11, 2009 Roger Berlind (NY, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We've had several BlueAir purifiers for at least 5 or 6 years now and are very happy with them. They are quiet at low speeds and have very high ratings for the amount of air they purify. We bought ours based on recommendations from the Allergy Buyer's Club. My wife is allergic to our Norwegian Elkhound and is only able to tolerate him because of our BlueAir purifiers.
We like the two 402 units that we have more than the 601 unit. The 402 units have 4 speeds, the lower 2 of which allow us to sleep. The 601 unit only has 3 speeds, of which only the lowest is quiet enough to allow sleep or listening to music or TV in the same room. The 601 unit is good for a family room or living room as long as you turn down the speed while in the room. The 402 units are much better for bedrooms.
so far work well.... June 22, 2009 S. Kim (TX) I bought this air purifier last year from Amazon. This year, this air purifier decreases my allergy symptom significantly. This year I did not take any medicine so far. Comparing other brands, Blueair is the quietest one I have ever had except Sharper Image that has a problem with excessive Ozone creating. If you have an allergy problem, it is worth to use it. One problem was a setting location because the air direction is somehow odd. Air direction has left 45 which have a hard time to be located. Otherwise, it works for me!
Great unit but larger than I expected May 15, 2009 Mediahound (SF Bay Area, CA United States) This is a great unit but it larger than I expected. If you have a small bedroom or office, it may look a bit imposing.
It runs very quiet at the two lowest settings and even at the third setting, I found the sound soothing enough to sleep with!
On the negative side, it has no electronic timer, remote or digital display like some of the other units have. It's also quite cumbersome and heavy to move and includes no caster wheels to make that easier.
On the plus side, it works very well and is more efficient and quiet than smaller units. The design is also more proven; I compared it with a smaller unit (the 250E) and the 400 series works a lot better for a number of reasons (better filter, it charges the particles so that they stick to the filter, larger, etc.) Also, because of the design, you can put things like books on top of it if you want to since it takes in and output air from the sides. You can also place it against a wall, something you cannot really do with the smaller 250E as it has the filter on the back.
All in all, this is a great unit as it performs very well is very quiet and well made.
Ok for Light Smoking December 13, 2007 Steven H. Hicks (New York, NY) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought the 402 with the Smokestop filter as I smoke about 3 cigars a week in my apt in the wintertime. This model is good enough for my purposes, but if you smoke more than that I'd suggest the 501 instead.
As others have noted, the 402 is silent on settings 1 and 2 and produces about the same amount of noise as a tower PC fan on setting 3. Setting 4 is noisy so I switch to that setting just before I leave for work if I've smoked the night before. When I return at the end of the day there us usually little or no smoke smell.
I'd estimate the Smokestop filter to contain about 3 pounds of activated charcoal. Much more than the thin layer found in most filters.
The unit itself is very well constructed and for an air filter it looks stylish. Access to the inside for the occasional vacuuming and filter change is extremely easy (large hinged side door).
