Amazon.com Review Recent reports from the EPA estimate that the indoor environment may be two to five times as polluted as outdoor air--and since most Americans spend 90% of their time indoors, that poor air quality can produce harmful immune-system reactions. An essential for anyone with allergies or asthma, this Honeywell air cleaner uses patented technology to rid the home or office of dust, dander, pollen, mold spores, dust mites, and smoke. Specially designed air intake and exhaust grills and a specially designed blade produce maximum airflow and minimum noise, while a high-efficiency HEPA filter traps more than 99% of even the tiniest particles. Sound-reducing insulation further dampens operational noise, and the Intelli-Check electronic indicator lets you know when it's time to change filters. Three power levels let you customize air cleaning to your own needs. The Honeywell 17000 changes all the air in an average 12- by 14-foot room six complete times an hour. It has a robust Clear Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 130 for tobacco smoke, pollen, and dust, indicating the volume of filtered air delivered and thus the speed of filtering. --Mary Park

Great little workhorse November 10, 2009 EPP (Sunnyside, Queens, NYC) I owned the Honeywell 17000 for 10 years- since '99- and it finally broke a few months ago. It came reccomended by my allergist-- cost effective and good for a small space. It was a reliable, hard working unit-- I moved 5 times (+?) with it, abused it by not changing the outer filter as requently as it needed and have a cat! I decided to replace the unit with the 17005 as it's programmable with remote. So far, so good...
Yes the 17000 and 17005 create a white noise, air pushing sound, which I like anyway (kills noises for sleeping), but it's not deafening, and if it bothers you throw it in the corner of the room; it will cycle the air the same. I would disagree that it's as loud as an a/c-- those things roar!
Anyway, these two websites might help you make your decision, too.

Instant relief!! November 8, 2009 Operafilly (Fallbrook, Ca United States) This was such a simple fix to several problems, sinus pressure and difficulty sleeping, and feeling brainless and singing was pure torture. I was using many otc and herbal remedies to little success. What sleep I would get I would not awaken refreshed from. Sinuses would still be sore and I felt listless and thick headed.
Somehow I managed to think of how dirty the air is after 10 months of no rain and gave this unit a try. The first night alone aleviated much of the sinus pressure........then I could sleep better. I find the low setting no problem to sleep to, and I sleep light. After a few days I could sing easily, instead of trying to sing thru the concrete wall of my sinuses..when my voice would jump in my nose or crack in my throat as I had no control.
As I still have to work outside a few hours each day, I sometimes get a bit of sinus pressure so I use Sinus Buster when I feel that.
I wake up with EVERGY starting my outside chorse at 5:30 AM. Before I'd drag until 6-7. I knew it should help, but I had no idea how much.
Honeywell 17000 HEPA QuietCare Air Cleaner October 27, 2009 M. Ashton (Pfafftown, NC USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the third Honeywell Hepa Air Cleaner that I have purchased. The first was at a regular retail store and the last two were here at Amazon. As a severe allergy and asthma sufferer, I need more than meds, filters on our house heating & air unit and other measures to contain my allergy outbreaks. I keep one of the Honeywell units in the masterbedroom, one in the den and the other is a "floater" for whichever area is needed. The filter is easy to change and I have not yet had to change any hepa filters (the oldest one is several years old!).
I definitely would recommend this product to anyone looking for an Air Cleaner. It does all that it promises and more.
Decent Unit, But Loud and Not Extremely Long-Lived September 3, 2009 Michael Cerkowski We got this filter to supplement one of the old round style ones. It works better than that one because of the three speeds as opposed to two and the better airflow pattern, but while the old round filter is still working fine, this one seems to have burned a wire in the motor after about 5 years. It still works, but the burned wiring smell defeats the purpose. Yes, we replaced the filters on schedule. We do have lots of dust, but that hasn't killed the old one. Certainly not bad, but not Five Star performance. It is easier to remove and replace the filter on this one.
Great performance and reasonably priced. May 27, 2009 Christopher Kuttruff (San Diego, CA) I recently started experiencing allergy symptoms and my doctor recommended possibly picking up an air filter. I was assuming I might have to pay as much as a couple hundred dollars for anything with decent quality, but this product definitely proved me wrong.
It is fairly quiet, has four main settings and has made a significant difference in the air quality of my room. I've noticed the collection of dust in my room has decreased and some of the allergy-related symptoms I was having have gone away.
I would definitely recommend this model for anyone looking for a reasonably priced option.
