Best Disposal November 24, 2009 Amanda Fisk (Campbell, CA USA) My home warranty company AHS would not allow me to replace like for like, only same horsepower. I had a 3/4 hsp InSinkErator installed new 16 yrs ago, the allowable replacement is a WasteKing 3/4 and the plumber did not use any sealant at the sink, so it leaks like a seive. He kept saying he was a plumber. I feel like a 2nd class citizen, while paying 16 yrs for a home warranty policy. Same with their washer repairmen, I am on the 6th man and Maytag Clothers washer still does not wash thru a complete cycle. Better to do it yourself.
Easy replacement for Badger 1 November 7, 2009 TomK1 (Brookeville, MD) I purchased this item to replace a Badger 1 (made by the same company) after 12 years of very light use. It's quite heavy and is packaged intelligently with very little waste save the box itself and the Styrofoam packaging.
The instructions are excellent and the 26 steps will take you anywhere from 1-2 hours depending on your exact needs during installation.
Physically, the unit looks much stouter than the old Badger. I don't know if this is just "packaging" or whether or not it's actually better.
A few notes on installation:
1) You need to purchase plumber's putty, about $1.50 at the hardware store
2) My installation was hardwired, so I had to reuse the strain relief from the old badger. This was an additional 30 seconds of work. If you have an under-counter outlet, you'll need to reuse the cord from the old disposal
3) Some here have complained of the difficulty of getting the Evolution to match up and lock on the flanges, I had no such trouble, mine locked up right away.
4) You'll need a helper to replace the sink mount when you put the ring into place. The instructions themselves suggest using the disposal to hold the sink ring in place. That might work.
My family notices that it's much more quiet, although I don't notice the difference. It is not night and day as some have suggested.
Overall the unit is quieter, the installation instructions are good, and the 4-year inhouse warranty convinced me this was the correct one to get, as I would prefer this to be my last disposal in this house.
I'm giving this 5 stars on the basis of good overall construction and instructions. I can't tell you much about it's durability since it's brand new, but I expect it to be better than the Badger.
Is Amazon an Authorized Insinkerator dealer? October 10, 2009 pvsurfer Like someone else said, installation would have been a lot simpler if it came with a connected power cord & plug - but what the heck, it's in and operational. :)
It may be a little late to be concerned about this, but is Amazon an authorized Insinkerator reseller??? If not, Insinkerator won't honor the warranty!
Frustrated Instation October 3, 2009 D. Eldrenkamp (Chicago Area, Illinois) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is not a DIY install! BEWARE!!!
I'm no rookie, having installed 3 or 4 disposals in my day. I know how do do this. So when mine went out, I signed up for the "quick" little fix it job.
Whoever designed that new noise reducing colar, never actually installe one. I spent 2 hours trying to compress the seal to get the locking ring engaged!
Eventually, I gave up on muscle power and went to the trunk of my car and got the jack out. That worked better, but the sink started lifing out! I have a big cast iron sink!
To get this job done, my wife had to sit on the sink, while I jacked from below. It took that much to get the seal compressed enough to engage the three tabs on the locking colar. What a nightmare!
This is not a DIY install! BEWARE!!!
5 star average for a reason September 27, 2009 M. Bechtel (Plainfield, IL USA) Easy as 1-2-3: This is the one to buy.
1. They say that the larger "Essential" model is 40% quieter vs. baseline whereas this is only 30% quieter. For what it's worth, this sucker is about 300% quieter than the ISE 333 beastie that it replaced. I have not regretted the 10% quietness I'm supposedly missing for so much as an instant.
2. Size-Wise, this thing is more than sufficient for usual household use. Critically (for me) its size is in line with the size of "prior generation" models, meaning that it matches the spaces (and pipe layouts) of whatever disposal you're likely replacing. It's small in the same way that today's Extra Value Meals are small: They're the same as last generation's large. :)
2. If you're replacing a previous generation InSinkErator (specifically, the 333, 555, or 555) you can re-use the existing mounting rings etc. This delightful suprise ended up turning an estimated 3 hour project into a 25 minute project. A rare example of things being EASIER than I planned going in.
