Works Great .....From Practical Experience April 20, 2009 J. Martin (Jacksonville FL USA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have been using Titan tankless water heaters in my rental properties in North Florida, and just installed one in my home. In the rental units, they are over 5 years old and still going strong. I tried a Bosch-TempStar unit from Lowes that cost $450.00 + tax, and it was a total loss after one year. The hard water in FL destroyed it and if I shipped it back to the manufacturer at my expense, they *might* have shipped me another one. That is useless to me, as the Bosch units are obviously not made for hard water applications. I replaced it with a Titan two years ago...no problems. The reviews citing inconsistent temperatures are probably due to improper electrical service to the unit. If they are installed with a heavy enough wire gauge running to your fuse box, they work as advertised. If the electrician did not run a new heavier gauge wire appropriate to the particular amperage of the unit, then the unit will work, but will present symptoms like one reviewer described. I have begun installing an inexpensive ($30) sediment filter inline in front of the Titan, and believe for hard water applications this will significantly extend the life of the unit. In Florida the N-120 will power two concurrent and endless hot showers (with 1.5 gpm shower heads) and water at the kitchen sink will be warm, and that is with the unit turned down to 3/4 power. So for a 3/2 house in warm climates, the N-120 is all you need. My experience with plumbers and electricians is that most of them don't have a clue about properly installing these units, which is simple if you follow the manufacturers directions. They will tell you they do, but when onsite are guessing. Therefore, I HIGHLY recommend Titan units, but in my experience you must do your homework and tell your contractor what you want, which for an N-120 is: 1) a 60 amp breaker in your fuse box 2) a run of wire from the unit to the fuse box that is heavy enough gauge to support the spec of the unit (the existing wire for a typical old style water heater is NOT heavy enough) 3) wall mount the unit vertically anywhere indoors (attic and garage OK) and put any kind of typical home use sediment filter in front of it. Do these things and you'll generally reduce your entire electric bill by 30% immediately. All these steps are exactly what Titan recommends on their website and in their literature. You'll love these things, if you get it installed properly, that is! The price is almost unbelievably low, and you are buying American. No I don't work for Titan, but maybe I should! Good luck!
Best thing i ever brought March 25, 2009 P. Walker (Kingston Jamaica) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I live in Jamaica and first time heard about this product was in 1998. At that time the house that i lived in had a tank type water heater.
I moved a year later and the apartment I rented didn't have a heater in it. So while on a trip to the US in 1999, I went to Miami and brought one for about the same price, $230. I installed it in my apartment and it worked like a charm.
Since then I have moved at least 4 times and every time I've moved I took it with me and reinstalled it with ease and with no problems. I now own my own apartment and it still works like the day I brought it and I have NEVER had to get and replacement parts for it since 2000. In fact I recommend it to everyone that I meet that needs a water heater.
Buy it. you won't regret it I promise you.
Bought 2 both lasted 3 years October 6, 2008 David Johnson (Charlotte NC) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Bought two of these for a 4900 sq ft house. Split the house, one for master bath and other bed rooms, other for kitchen and utility area. They worked well but only lasted about 3 years. Forget trying to get service from the factory, it is a joke. Located in Miami, if someone does answer the phone, you better speak Spanish. Building a new home now but i think I will go with a more reputable brand at a higher cost.
Titan tankless water heater "beware" December 17, 2007 Richard L. Hollen 20 out of 23 found this review helpful
I purchased my first Titan about three years ago, hooked it up and turned the power on. Smoke came out of it. I called "Niagara" the maker of the Titan. Was very tedious, hard to find an English speaking person. After several calls I spoke with a technician who told me to send it back. The new one I recieved worked, but the temperature fluctuated. So I hooked it up to feed a small 10 gallon water heater. This smoothed out the temperature changes but defeats the purpose of tankless. But I had endless hot water that didn't fluctuate, and I wasn't storing 40 gallons of hot water.
Yesterday the unit stopped making hot water, all the lights are on but no hot water. Reading some other reviews it seems that's the life span of this model. I wouldn't suggest buying the Titan. The company is hard to deal with, hard to reach, defensive, and seems like it's somebody's garage buisness.
But the trick of hooking the unit up to a small tank, seems to work well and should work for all tankless water heaters to smooth out the temperature.
Excellent, economical tankless water heater August 21, 2007 M. Ruge (Western New York, USA) 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I bought the Titan SCR2 last year on eBay, from a reputible seller, for our small cottage and have no regrets. For our needs, this unit was so economical that I'm pretty sure the money we saved on our electric bill has just about paid for the unit in one year. Our cottage includes a kitchen, bathroom and laundry room and we never run out of hot water. Additionally, after having the electrician install the electric service needed for the unit I was able to install (the plumbing part of it) myself with the detailed instructions that are included. I can't say enough about this water heater. Also, the warrenty is great as the company that manufatures the unit completely stands by their product. Because I bought it on eBay, I also contacted the manufacturer directly in Florida and they explained to me that if the unit quits working and it's still under warrenty they will repair /replace it at no cost and if by chance the warrenty expires and then the unit quits working, you just send the unit to them along with a check for $50 and they will repair/replace it and send it back to you. You really can't beat that, considering a plumber (who probably wouldn't be able to fix it anyway) would cost a heck of a lot more than $50. So I highly recommend this water heater...I am also going to purchase another unit for our home. Now keep in mind, if you have a large house or there are more than 2 of you in your household, this might not be the unit for you, you might want to upgrade to the next model because this unit isn't going to perform as well if you are running a dishwash or doing dishes and your child is taking a shower while another person is running hot water in another bathroom. Oh and we live in NY state near Buffalo, so we have pretty cold winters and the water heater still works great.
