5 out of 5 stars OuUtstanding Performance   February 1, 2009
L. Myers
I am not sure where all these people who complain live and what all might be wrong with their units and installation, and house specifics but.... I grew up "on the other side of the pond" and tankless heaters is all we had and could have in tiny apartments. So, when we were building and designing our new house in Central Virginia, I did not have to say much to my (power-plant operator) husband to agree to have this unit. We agreed that we would need a unit designed for "two major appliances at a time" - say you take a shower and want dishwasher to run -- no problem, this thing can do it! We had it for 2 years, it works everyday. It is so small, people always go "what is that? - water heater - what? - water heater that does not waste my money!" We don't have city water, we use our own deep well. This winter is rather cold, water comes from a well through underground pipes, through a pump in the basement, it starts off very cold .. I have to wait 1 (one) minute and get my hot water running. It is set for 108-112 depending on the season. The only thing I can agree in these posts is -- sometimes -- the water may go hot or cold on you while taking shower. Besides the comments made about shower pressure, etc, the manual explains that this is known for houses on WELL water supply and there is a remedy to it. We have not fixed this yet since it is actually NOT that bad and NOT so common for us. We had 6 adults in the house for Christmas last year, cooked, washed dishes, shower and laundry, all with that one little super-star and it never failed! People, just make sure you got the best plumber, the most accurate installation, etc. Tankless is the way to go.

1 out of 5 stars Crazy Temperature Fluctuations   January 15, 2009
S.Flash (Illinois)
Sadly my experience is similar to many already posted.
My family takes showers with one hand always on the temperature control - the hot water temperature fluctuates way too much. The hot water doesn't come on at 0.8 gpm but rather at 0.98 gpm, so you have to have a pretty strong flow to even get the hot water going.

I've also had the fun of long conversations with Bosch Tech support but also to no avail.

The ability to take longer showers probably would be nice, except who wants to take a longer shower when the temperature fluctuates all over the place. IT DEFINITELY WAKES YOU UP IN THE MORNING!

I've already convinced at least 12 people NOT to buy a Bosch tankless water heater, some were ready to purchase it right away. I think I'll call tech support one more time, then I too am going to contact the Better Business Bureau.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible hot/cold extremes or no hot water, overflowing valve - total disaster!   January 5, 2009
J. Hawk (San Francisco, CA)
This unit was installed in our new-construction home, and is currently being replaced. I fear our problems will continue, and I'll update later.

Up until now: We have 2 units. One "works," meaning it gives intermittent hot/cold extremes in the shower, and takes forever to heat up in any application.

The other unit, which services our upstairs bathrooms, is nonfunctional and being replaced. We had hot water once for about 3 minutes, but otherwise none. It gave weird error codes when we tried to use it. It overflowed twice and flooded our basement. It made a loud noise heard throughout a 3-story house when in use. Neither the gas man nor the plumber could figure out what was wrong and what could be done to fix it. The gas man increased our intake so we get more gas at one time - double what he said we should need based on going through all of our appliances/showers - but that did not help either.

Considering the consistency of our problems with the problems of others listed here and elsewhere on the Internet, this seems to be a defective product. Bosch needs to own up, pay people the replacement cost for new, different water heaters, and discontinue this dangerous and defective product.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Engineered, even worse Customer service   October 17, 2008
Green Reviews (Philadelphia, PA United States)
Save your money.

I bought and received the Bosch from Amazon and didn't get what I bargained for. Prerequisite projects included:

1- installing a new oversized gas line ($350)
2- z-flex thimbles and wall venting for the Bosch exhaust gases($500)
3- Mounting the heater on the newly framed basement wall ($300)
4- New plumbing and PVC air intake ($400)

Since the heater needs a .8 gpm minimum flow to turn on its burner, you can't start faucets or showers on low settings, and tasks that call for short bursts of water need to run longer to pull hot water through the line from the unit to the faucet (Hot/Cold/Hot water sandwiches). It will definitely waste a LOT more water than the old tank.

The heater operated the first time out of the box, BUT it makes a loud whistling sound when a single shower or appliance is calling for hot water. I can hear the howling from throughout the house!

Now for the most disappointing part. Although other online reviews have stated the noise/temperature fluctuations/etc are recurrent problems, the folks at Bosch Water Heating in Waitsfield, VT acted like they had not heard of the problems nor did they have any helpful solutions. We had already done every diagnostic they recommended before contacting their technical support line and then had to wait for them to ask all the same questions in the owner's manual over again.

After wasting over an hour with customer support , they offered to call a a different plumber out to troubleshoot the gas/air calibration of the unit (as others have reported in their reviews as being ineffective). I questioned why that would work any better for me than for the others and the Tech rep just fell quiet.

Hmm, sounds like a Bosch has known problems that lots of others have now posted, yet Bosch acts as if they haven't heard of them / still suggests ineffective solutions. Bosch customer service is unsatisfactory and they have lost another customer for life.

1 out of 5 stars Problem from Day 1- Don't Buy   September 22, 2008

We had this unit installed by a professional plumber- and with all the venting necessary, a costly install. After our first unit had to be replaced because of a myriad of error codes, second unit was installed (we had to pay labor). Replacement unit created intermittent cold/scalding hot water problem, and plumber made another visit, where he installed a new gas line, thinking the unit was not getting enough gas. That didn't solve problem; turns out it was a flow restrictor in shower head- about a 15 minute fix.
It has worked fine for a year, but now I am getting EA and EC error codes, and we have to power the unit on and off to get hot water. Even that isn't working now. I am going to cut my losses and buy another one at this point- don't even want to look at that thing anymore.

Oh yeah- customer service is terrible, from what the plumbers have told me. They wait on hold while the clock ticks.

One of the worst products I have ever bought. Bosch should stick to electric razors.
