5 out of 5 stars Get it you will enjoy your woodworking more   November 11, 2009
Nasar Azam (Glen Ellyn, IL United States)
I have been using this on and off for a year. I have planed Hard Maple, White Oak and also soft wood. It does a fantastic job. Recently I had an incident where the planer will not plane and the boards were getting stuck. I though it was a dull knife. What turned out was that I did not attach a dust collector and the chips were coming in the way. Once I cleansed the chips it worked like a champ with no problems whatsoever. Get this one and you will enjoy your woodworking a lot more. Most of the times the surfaces do not need to be sanded! It may be a little expensive but worth every penny. I have yet to change the blades. I am hoping that it will be an easy task.
Previously I had a Dewalt 733/34 and I did not like it.

Tools that I used most:
Makita Planer - 5 star
Festool Domino - 5 star
Bosch Table Saw - 4 star
Festool ATF 55 - 5 star
Bosch cordless drill/screw driver - 5 star

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Machine!   May 18, 2009

I am a contractor and was surprised to unpack, turn on, and watch it plane perfectly. I could not be happier with this tool. As far as I am concerned, it paid for itself in the first trim out job.

5 out of 5 stars 1.5 Years 1-2 times a week   April 11, 2009
T. Rutledge (East Hartford, CT United States)
I am a wood working Hobbyist, mainly a box maker and small projects. I've had this for about 1.5 years. Sometimes I don't use it for a couple weeks, but at the beginning of every project I'm always planning for a hour or so to get the required thickness. It definitely does produce snipe, but I'm yet to hear of a planer that doesn't. I've never changed the blades or even made an adjustment. I took it out of the box, plugged it in, and planed away. After 1.5 years of use every few days/weeks, its still producing constant thickness boards as if its straight out of the box.

5 out of 5 stars Rock solid and reliable little workhorse, but why so expensive now?   March 17, 2009

I bought this planer from Amazon well over two years ago. I am a professional woodworker and own a shop in San Diego. This machine gets used daily and we have literally run thousands and thousands of feet of lumber through it, up to and including 12" wide 8/4 oak. With the big boards it sometimes needs a little push or pull but it does the job without barely a protest. Sure there's a little snipe sometimes but most can be prevented with proper feeding technique. On long runs we clamp down the adjustment handle to make sure there isn't any vibration creep that could alter the thickness setting. Frankly I am amazed at how consistently reliable it has been, no down time at all. It's a great portable jobsite machine too. The only maintenance is a periodic thorough cleaning and lube and of course blade changes which are a snap. I can see that the rollers might need replacing at some point, but man have we got our money's worth out of this no-frills little workhorse. But why is it so expensive now? Like I said, we bought the identical model just over two years ago and paid $260- $300 less than the current price! Does anyone know why the price has jumped so much? (I tried to edit this down a star to 4 for this reason but I guess you can't do that unless you start your review over completely and its late and I am tired.) We now have a full size 20" but I like having a portable like this one too. If the Makita ever gave up the ghost I wouldn't buy again, but only because of it's current price. Otherwise this is one solid machine, if you can afford it.

4 out of 5 stars After a year of heavy use   March 15, 2009

I've really worked this planer for over a year now planing rough cut doug fir lumber into useable boards and it's been great. What a workhorse. It does create a mess but what planner doesn't? I bought the dust hood to deflect shavings but it's useless without a strong vacuum attached to it. I just changed the blades for the first time this week without problem. Keep the drive chain lubricated and you shouldn't have a problem. The only reason for four stars instead of five is the scale on the left side of the planer housing should be used as a general guide only. This housing must be removed to lube the chain and in putting it back it could be +/- as much as an eighth inch if you're not paying attention.
