Amazon.com Review
Delta calls its 22-580 a finishing planer, but it's really two planers in one. A dimensioning speed of 60 cpi allows you to shave rough wood to its desired thickness quickly and accurately, with virtually no snipe. Then, with a single pass at the quicker finishing speed of 90 cpi, your wood comes out ultrasmooth and ready to go. The razor-sharp, double-sided M2 steel knives are powered by a 15 amp, 120-volt, single-phase motor. Bells and whistles like a blade zero indicator (which lets you set the cutterhead to the exact thickness of your wood), patented cutterhead lock (which eliminates snipe), and easy blade-change system add to the value, as do the oversize infeed and outfeed tables, which make it easier to glide your wood through the machine. Overall, this is one solid piece of machinery. --Carl Thress

Amazon.com Product Description
No woodworking shop is complete without a solid finish planer, and the DELTA 22-580 13-inch finish planer takes care of this need and then some. Its ability to quickly and accurately size and finish lumber helps save money by allowing you to purchase rough-cut lumber instead of already processed stock. The powerful 15 Amp motor produces a cutterhead speed of 10,000 RPM, and its cooling fan helps to blow dust and chips away from the machine and into a dust collection system. The two-blade cutting system features two speed of cutting power – a dimensioning setting of 60 CPI, or a finishing setting of 90 CPI. Other features include easy cutterhead height adjustments, cutterhead lock, depth stop for easy repetitive cuts, and a blade zero indicator.

5 out of 5 stars tools that work   November 11, 2009
George D. Doak (preston, ny)
A great tool. I have used it for over a year and it has not failed to produce a very good quality, finished board.

5 out of 5 stars Superb planer - have owned for years and keep working great!   October 21, 2009

Have owned this planer for about 7 years and it still works like new. Great little planer, versatile, great size and saves money by allowing you to purchase rough cut wood then do the job yourself. Earns the reputation it deserves. I see it is out of stock and may have been replaced by newer models - if you have the opportunity to get your hands on one of these in good shape - go for it. Durable, great performance and superb price.

1 out of 5 stars Woodworking nightmare   October 9, 2009
M. Walters (Seattle, Wa)
This thing is a living nightmare. Seriously, you want to wake up and find that this machine runs properly, but you can't.
I am a carpenter and I decided to spend more on this larger planer (compared to lesser models) thinking that I would get professional performance, (it's described as "industrial")- oh, how I was wrong.
All along I have experienced similar problems as those listed above- rollers don't work even after cleaning; blade speed switch takes extreme force to change; snipe all over the place. All this even after spending HOURS adjusting!
On the plus side it does feel like a solid, well built machine when you pick it up, however that's the only think going for it.

The problems this planer has going for it indicate that it was very, very poorly designed. I mean, seriously, how was this ever sent to market with these kind of flaws? I'm not talking about simple flaws like bad paint job, or bad ergonomics, I'm talking about flaws that make this planer un-useable. I thought I was buying a professional tool! I guess delta gets the last laugh...

I will never buy delta again.

5 out of 5 stars Delta is King   February 26, 2009
Peter J. Wiles (Milpitas, CA United States)
$428 for a planer of this quality and delivered in 7 days I am just astounded.
Got the nachine a couple of days ago.
Robustly packaged which is refreshing.
Did all the set up, clean up and waxing per the instruction manual. Found one problem one of the two screws for the cutter guard was missing. Checked in the packaging and inside the machine..it just was not there.
Called delta customer service and they responded immediately and professionally and a replacement is in the mail.
Customer service guy even reccomended the correct size of socket head metric screw to act as a temporary replacement.
I fortunately took the trouble to download the instruction manual ahead of time so my set up block for the outfeed roller was fabricated and ready to go. Insead of using a metal shim I checked and found that Norton Hook and Loop 220 grit sanding pads are exactly 20 thou thick so I cut a piece off a worn pad, taped the edges down to the top of the set up block and instead of watching for the blade to contact the shim I just listened for it to contact the sandpaper. Easy as pie and roller was dead nuts so no adjustment needed.
Ran a piece of scrap red oak through for the height indicator check and that was on the money. How great to have a machine set up correctly right out of the box. Next I decided to make the machine perform a couple of difficult tasks.. planing highly figured curly cherry, rock hard Honduran Rosewood and Lacewood which has no discernible grain direction.
The planer perfomed like a champ, no tear out, bo snipe great finish at both speeds and dimensionally within 5 thou of my target thickness.
I have not run a lot of wood through yet and as an amateur maker of fine cigar humidors I need accuracy and finish not volume production so right out of the box I am convinced that this is the king of planers. Was going to give 4 stars for the mising screw but their excellenc customer service got them the 5th star back.

3 out of 5 stars Tighten that belt!   February 16, 2009

This planer is nice, but I discovered that I too was having issues after planing my third board of hard maple. It appeared that I could only plane 1/128" and the board would still get stuck. I waxed the table, cleaned my rollers, and made sure my outfeed roller was 0.020" lower as described in the manual. Why would the planer start doing this? I took off the right cover where the belt drive is located. I noticed, with the machine off, that I could take the belt off by working off the pulley's. This can't be right, there is too much slack. The documentation says nothing about the belt or the tension. I plan on calling up delta to complain about this. I only found out in the FAQ section on delta describing how to replace a belt. This was it! It described the screw (ref 234) to allow the bracket to swing down (ref 145). My problem was I need to add tension. This solved the problem and it works again!! Now, I noticed that if you push down on the motor housing, that you can actually cause more slack in the belt. Maybe I did this, or vibration caused the screw to loosen. Regardless, my belt housing is kind of melted a little due to some belt contact, which is cosmetic. I should note that I never used this unit without a dust collector. I didn't even want to try. I have always used the dust collector and it gets 98% of all the material. Overall, I like the product, but the documentation could be better. I haven't read a review yet that discussed the belt tension as being the problem, so I hope this really helps someone out.
