Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Our portable planers have been so popular that we couldn't resist giving our customers just one more option. For this, we wanted a portable planer that was lighter to carry around and finished cuts faster, but didn't lack muscle or design quality. The result was the Model G0505. This new 12-1/2" planer features a 2 HP motor, 10,000 RPM cutterhead, 32 FPM feed rate, top-mounted return rollers and extra large table extensions. Also, other little things like 1/8" thick knives (instead of the 1/16" thick knives on most portables) are proof that this dynamo will rule the jobsite for years!

4 out of 5 stars Good Quality Bench Top Planer   October 22, 2008
R. CASSIDY (test)
This is my first Planer and my first Grizzly tool. The product arrived as described, was very easy to setup and didn't have any detectable snipe. I've run a good bit through it thus far and would definitely recommend the dust hood for it. This tool is a great value.

5 out of 5 stars worked great on my white oak.   October 19, 2008
Michael Goulish (Ann Arbor)
I started using this about 6 months ago. I bolted it to my table first. (That was the only "assembly" required before starting to use it.) I have used it so far on about 20 linear feet of walnut, and about 100 linear feet of white oak. The white oak was rough lumber that I had to remove a large amount of thickness from -- 3/8" or more, so that was a large number of passes through very tough wood.

The results so far have been excellent. I have not seen any snipe at all. The cuts have all been very smooth, no waviness at all that I can see. No damage to blades yet. The feed action is nice and smooth, and the bed is long enough so that it will hold onto a good sized (8') piece of wood for you after it's done planing without dropping it.

The depth gauge is accurate enough to get you in the ballpark, and then you should use callipers after every pass or two to see how you're doing. At one point I wanted to make some pieces of wood that were exactly 0.465" thick (don't ask) and I was able to do that with no problem.

I believe there is a small flaw -- I think that the blades are not perfectly parallel with the bed. The right side feels a little more snug than the left. I have not tried to measure the difference, but I believe it's less than 1/32". Not a problem.

I have not used another planer in years, and I cannot remember how loud the last one was that I used. I can't imagine that any planer would be anything like quiet. But this planer is definitely loud. It's really, really loud. Use good hearing protecting unless you're already deaf.

The dust collection system I use for this machine is my garage floor and a big broom. If anybody has anything smaller than that and it works -- I would sure like to hear about it.

For the price of this gadget, this is absolutely terrific.

(Oops -- I just read other people's reviews. Somebody mentioned adjusting the feed table. What? I can adjust the feed table? :-) Gee, maybe I should read the manual...)

OK, there's my last point: This Tool Works Well Even if you Don't Read the Manual.

2 out of 5 stars Worked Great   August 12, 2008

It was an absolute joy to use for the week or so that it worked. Quiet, powerful, smooth-cutting - in general did an excellent job, though I didn't ask too much of it at first. But then a week or so after unpacking it it simply didn't turn on in the morning, and a few weeks of dealing with customer service later - I got a replacement part, installed it, nothing changed - I had wasted so much time and energy that I had to hand out the money for a new planer. I had a job that couldn't be held up any longer by a useless planer. I assume that this was a total fluke, and that the tool is in general quite solid and reliable, but I'm still quite frustrated by the experience. In the meantime, my new Dewalt planer, which cost 150 dollars more or so, is louder, uglier, messier, bulkier, and less pleasant to use and have around the shop. But so far, it's turned on every time I've flicked the switch, so I can't really complain.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny   January 22, 2008

Even though this was not an expensive planer it performs like one. After clearing a bunch of Cherry from my property I had it cut to 5/4 and it's been stickered and drying for four years. It was time to start making things with it. My brother in law raved about his Grizzly so I bought mine.
What a good investment. I was a little concerned it only had two knives instead of three but soon found out that was not a problem at all. This machine does the job without even hesitating. It quickly has become my favorite shop tool.
