This one's a bit of a paradox: The do-it-yourselfer might pass by this compressor in favor of an oil-free, no-maintenance model, but it's actually one of the best on the market for the homeowner, hobbyist and weekend warrior.

There are three factors that made us form this opinion. First, it's the quietest compressor we've ever encountered. It's a remarkable departure in a genre of tools that normally force you to suspend conversation while it's cycling. The MAC700 puts out 80 decibels, according to the folks at Makita, and when you compare that to the 90 and up you get from most units, that's practically a hum. So we like this for household use, especially in a basement shop.

Next on our list of pluses for the DIY-er is the low-amp draw, and with that, fewer trips to the breaker box and less chance of premature motor failure. The other feature that won us over is the easy-on-the-hand lever handle ball valve that saves your knuckles when you drain the tank. It's also got a really fast cycle, so by the time you take a sip of water, you're ready to work again.

It's made like a champ, with a roll-bar handle that protects your investment, a cast-iron cylinder for durability and an oil sight glass that makes maintenance a breeze.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

2.0 HP with Big Bore Engineered Pump
The MAC700 is powered by a 2.0 HP motor. The Makita Big Bore engineered pump with cast iron cylinder has greater bore and stroke for increased compression, faster recovery and less noise. The cast iron construction is engineered for increased durability even under tough job site conditions. The MAC700 has an oil-lubricated pump and is equipped with a large automotive style filter for increased air intake and greater efficiency. The Big Bore oil-lubricated pump is also more efficient: the MAC700 runs cooler and at half the RPM of most competitive units, resulting in greater motor and pump life and lower noise. The 2.6-gallon tank sustains an operating pressure of 130 PSI, and delivers 40PSI (3.8 CFM) and 90 PSI (3.3 CFM). The low AMP draw reduces instances of tripped breakers and voltage drop that can cause premature motor failure. The roll bar handle provides portability and additional protection, helping it withstand harsh jobsite environments. Additional features include a convenient oil drain and oil sight glass, a tank drain valve that supersedes standard petcock design for easier maintenance, and finned discharge tubing that dissipates heat more efficiently.

Versatile Design for a Range of Applications
The MAC700 is engineered for low noise, high output and less maintenance, and delivers industrial power and results with improved durability under tough job site conditions. The MAC700 is just another example of Makita's commitment to innovative technology and best-in-class engineering.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compressor   October 29, 2009
bser2 (Salina, UT United States)

First of all, my compressor arrived with a broken motor cover. The shipping box looked perfect, with no damage at all. Try to find customer service phone #'s for Amazon. When I finally did, they told me to contact Makita, Makita told me I had to go through Amazon. Second call to Amazon, I was given the option of a discount or receiving a different compressor. I took the discount ($40) and will replace the cover myself. I could not understand they would not give me a new cover for a compressor that was otherwise perfect. Return shipping alone would cost much more than a new cover. (Plus shipping costs for a new compressor) If I could I would give Amazon and Makita a separate rating it would be 3* for Amazon and 1* for Makita customer service. They need to admit there is a problem. There has been too many broken covers. They could ship the cover not attached and bubble wrapped.

Now the 5* rating. The compressor, now fixed, is perfect. Much quiter than any other compressors that I have used. You really have to use it to appreciate how quite it is. Easy to fill with the provided oil, install the air filter, and run for the 20 minute break-in period.

This compressor will fill to 135 lbs in 1 min 20 sec with an air hose attached. I have not had a chance to use my air tools with it yet, but I sure it will handle all of my needs. The weight is not too much, just enought to give it a very solid feel. I am very satisfied with it.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Portable Compressor   October 29, 2009

Received this unit with no shipping issues. As others have said, this unit is very quite, and very well built. I don't have much run-time with it yet, but am sure it will give me good service. I had looked at a small Sears Compressor and luckily decided on the Makita. No comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Great little compressor   October 15, 2009

This has been a great compressor. I now have five, two large, three small. This is by far the best of the small ones. Handles framing gun well, maybe two if not used too hard. I was skeptical due to the many post about shipping damage, but this one arrived in perfect condition. Very quiet, glad I bought this over the oil less types. Although a bit heavy, I would recommed it without reservations. Best price I found, not tax/shipping.

4 out of 5 stars Great product and apparently better packaging   October 4, 2009
Jim McCorison (Orcas Island, WA)
I ordered the MAC700 with some trepidation. The reviews about the compressor itself are mostly favorable. But the reviews about the packaging indicated that it frequently arrived damaged. The motor on my small compressor (a cheap DeVilbiss) had just burned out, so I was in need of a portable compressor now and couldn't wait for damaged product returns and reship. Maybe I was lucky, but based upon prior reviews, the packaging of the compressor seems pretty good, and much more than "just a box". Of course, the gorillas at any of the shipping companies can damage any product no matter how carefully packaged.

So what about the compressor? It is a great little unit. We're using it as a portable for building a house. This means framing, installing tie plates, etc., siding, and eventually right down to the interior trim work and custom built-ins. The compressor happily provides 110-120 psi to my gun and does a reasonable job of keeping up. It wouldn't keep up with a full time professional, who I'm sure is a lot faster than I am. But it will happily drive 10-15 16p nails without a pause before it seems to be down in pressure enough that the nails aren't quite going in with as much gusto as they do with a full head of steam. When stitching siding with 8p galvanized nails I can run about 20 nails straight before I need to pause for 15 seconds or so. Our backup compressor is a 3hp 5 gallon roll around model and this little MAC700 does a far better job.

It is also very quiet. So far it has only been used outside or inside the open shell, but I expect that it will be a welcomed change from our old portable once we're working inside the closed in shell. Even working right next to it, the nail gun is louder than the compressor. No more ceasing conversation while you wait for the compressor to cycle.

I do have a couple of criticisms, hence the 4 star rating. When carrying the unit you need to be careful which way you carry it. The output pipe from the compressor head to the tank has thin circular cooling fins. When I carry it the wrong way I find the cooling fins scraping against my pants. While there has been no damage, I can easily see these thin fins getting accidently damaged.

The other problem with this unit is two-fold. When you turn down the gun pressure, the gauge doesn't accurately indicate the true pressure until you've shot a few nails. I've gotten in the habit of adjusting it to what I've learned to set it for, shooting a couple nails, then rechecking the setting. This problem may or may not be related to a problem I have with the kick-in pressure. When running at full pressure the compressor kicks in fairly quickly, but at lower output settings, the pressure range seems to be greater. So when I turn the compressor down to about 80psi to shoot sheathing nails, I find that I start to get a stair step affect of partially sunken nail heads just about the time the compressor kicks in. On the other hand, this could also be an indication of just how crappy modern plywood sheathing is. You have to be really careful of gun pressure to avoid over driving the nail heads. But that's a completely different topic.

Bottom line; would I buy another MAC700? In a heartbeat. We've used it heavily in the two weeks since it arrived and have driven in excess of 5,000 nails. It is quiet, powerful, and easily carried. A big plus to me in my situation was that the MAC700, delivered, was $45 less than DeVilbiss wanted for a replacement motor for our old compressor, not counting shipping fees. So I have a considerably better compressor for less money. How can that not be good.

4 out of 5 stars Great compressor. Does more than fill tires.   September 24, 2009
charles boyce (California USA)
I was not sure about this based on the reviews. I was looking for a unit that would operate a framing nailer. I am not a contractor and only need it from time to time on home remodel projects. So far I have had no trouble nailing off 1/2" sheething with 10d nails. This is at 70lbs pressure which is the recomended pressure for the Hitachi gun I got. When I went up to 16d nails I was forced to raise the pressure up to 80lbs but then no problem and I can get through half to 3/4's of a nail rack before the generator starts up again. Nails drive flush even into older doug fir (which is harder than green). Unit is heavyish, but not awkward to carry. Instructions were not helpful and seemed to assume some prior knowledge of air compressors but YouTube tutorials helped out there so no big deal. Would recommend this to home owner who needed to operate a framing nailer on small jobs or contractor who works alone and is not framing a house. This was my first compressor so I have no comparison but over all I am pleased. The plastic housing that everyone says came broken did not come broken.
