| 3.0 HP with Big Bore Engineered Pump The MAC5200 is powered by a 3.0 HP motor with built-in thermal overload for additional protection. The Makita Big Bore engineered pump with cast iron cylinder has greater bore and stroke for increased compression, faster recovery and less noise. The cast iron construction is engineered for increased durability even under tough job site conditions. The MAC5200 has an oil-lubricated pump and is equipped with a large automotive style filter for increased air intake and greater efficiency. The 5.2 gallon tank sustains an operating pressure of 140 PSI and delivers 40PSI (6.9 CFM) and 90 PSI (6.5 CFM), enough for two nailers. The oil-lubricated pump runs cooler, and the finned discharge tubing dissipates heat more efficiently. The roll-cage construction is built for extra protection for the pump and motor assembly, helping it withstand harsh jobsite environments. Ease-of-use and convenience features include tool hangers, a built-in storage compartment for air fittings and accessories, and an air hose wrap to store 50 feet of 3/8-inch air hose with handle folded or upright. Other features include a convenient oil drain and oil sight glass, and a tank drain valve that supersedes standard petcock design for easier maintenance.Versatile Design for a Range of Applications The MAC5200 is engineered for low noise, high output and less maintenance, and delivers industrial power and results with improved durability under tough job site conditions. Quiet air compressor October 27, 2009 D Lyon (Virginia) I read the reviews on this compressor and looked at the specs, it looked like it would do what I needed it to do. I was aware of the issues that others have had regarding the way it was received, the tire issues, and the noise, so I did have a few concerns. It was deliverd by UPS and there was a tear in the cardboard box, but there is an air compressor inside, there was no damage to the compressor itself. Unpacked it and added oil, ran it for the break-in time, it is definitely quieter than I expected, I can actually hear over it in my garage. Closed the tank drain and it built up 140 psi of pressure in a few minutes, so far it looks like it is just what I wanted.
Big small compressor September 10, 2009 Lifespeed I am very happy with this compressor. I installed it in the rafters in my garage and ran an iron pipe down the wall for compressed air without the compressor-on-the-floor clutter.
I will note that the wheels now have a steel hub, and should not crack as commented in the previous reviews. I don't use it mobile, so don't know for sure.
I have run the usual small air tools as well as the ultimate compressor workout: a die grinder. Of course, this compressor cannot keep up with an air hog like that. But it works admirably for occasional use of high CFM tools. When I have a need to use a big tool I am careful not run the compressor 100% duty cycle for hours on end. I have occasionally run it for 20 - 30 minutes at a stretch 100% before giving it a break.
It is perfect for my needs. I really like the small size. Big compressor (were talking 120V 20A here) performance in a small size. If you need to run a sandblaster, regular use of a die grinder, sander, etc, you should not even be looking at 120V single-cylinder compressors. Yes even those with a Big Tank ;)
Excellant compressor for the money August 12, 2009 G. Robinson (CO) The version I got has better wheels than described but if I was dragging it around a job site I would replace them with steel/pnumentaic wheels. As a shop compressor where you move it as needed it works very well indeed. As a stationary for a small shop it is fine. As a job site compressor where it is moved around it is not my first or even third choice (even replacing the wheels). A gas compressor is much more practical and the very high current draw of this unit limits the real extension cord length and effective portability. The version I got starts at 110psi and stops at 140. Drives a framing nailer and a UFO screw nailer just fine. There seems to be a possible issue with shut off but unless it is real and I have warintee problems I am satisfied. Well the auto shutoff no longer does. Their tech was helpful but they only get the same totally useless manual that the users do. They recently switched to Eagle for their compressors. They apparently don't make any compressors but just re-brand. I may change my rating depending on service that I get.
BTW don't count on service even in metro areas. There is no service in Colorado Springs, nearest Makita depot is Denver and they can have a 2 week delay while they order parts.
The unit folds nicely and fits in the back of a small SUV. At 100+ lbs its a little heavy to horse round routinely. The tool compartment is OK for storing connectors and adapters but not much else. You need access to all 6 sides of the compressor unless you don't use the handles.
Th version I got is loud but quieter than most compressors with similar CFM delivery (6 cfm @ 90 psi). Plenty to drive most air tools other then the large industrial type (will not come close to driving my 1" impact wrench, 10cfm@100psi).
Overall a excellent unit for the money. Yes there are better compressors but not close for the money.
Delivery condition: perfectly fine April 19, 2009 Charlie2095 (Northern California, United States) I ordered this compressor Friday April 10 2009, via Amazon Prime second day. It arrived Monday April 13, in more or less perfect condition.
This Compressor Rocks March 15, 2009 Rob G (MO) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am completely satisfied with this compressor.
Recovery is VERY quick. I use it for finish work, and it recovers fast. The only complaint I have, and it is very minor, is it is a little front heavy when you wheel it due to the length of the compressor protruding from the handle. But it's still not that bad, I just needed to find something.
Not complaining about the wheels either, but when it comes time to replace it, I'll get rubber wheels for it.
I thought about the DeWalt compressor, but heard from others outside of amazon it's not that great, and they like my Makita better and wish they had bought it.
By the way, the hose storage, and the storage compartment on it are nice complements, and great for storing nails and accessories. Having an oliled unit should make it last longer. I had a sealed unit before, didn't last all that long.
Pass on the DeWalt and buy this one.
