5 out of 5 stars Absolutely a great jointer   July 18, 2009
D. Green (Gunter, TX USA)

This jointer was ordered online from Amazon.com 7/14/2009 and UPS had it at my door on 7/17/2009.It went together within 1 1/2 hours. It weighs a full 95 lbs.The fence is extremly robust,as is the rest of the jointer. The adjustment handles are heavy metal also.If you can buy a better small jointer for $259.00,no sales tax and no shipping charge, then you had better buy it.Very easy to adjust the fence and it stays where you put it. The model # is Palmgren 84261

5 out of 5 stars Everything promised...and more   June 18, 2009

Unlike some other reviews on this product, mine arrived on time and very well packaged with no dents, dings, etc. One thing, this sucker is HEAVY! It definitely needs a home of its own. Assembly and setting up took me maybe a couple of hours. Assembly is straight forward with ample instructions. After assembly, the setup was non-existant. Everything was spot on from the factory with no adjustments necessary. With everything (including the fence) being cast iron, this machine is very stable and no discernable vibration. This product is definitely deserving of the five star rating as it has more than enough power to plane the maximum width hardwoods. Jointing is also excellent. After reviewing other jointers and actually doing hands-on with the Delta, I feel this is the best value for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Great jointer   June 10, 2009

This is a great small jointer. It leaves a finish as smooth as a baby's bottom and much better finish than a planner. Too bad that Amazon has such a hard time delivering it. The company needs a new distributor.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised!   May 28, 2009

I ordered this tool in the AM of May 26 using Prime next day delivery. I missed the part about "Usually Ships in 2 to 3 days". When the order confirmation showed expected delivery 1-2 June, I called Customer service and asked why I was being charged for next day delivery. They credited my account for $4.00. Now the BIG suprise: The tool arrived midmorning 28 May. Amazon Customer Service is the BEST!

Several reviewers reported shipping damage, but my machine arrived by UPS in perfect condition. It was laying in some crushed styrofoam but the styrofoam died an honorable death doing its duty. RIP good styrofoam soldiers. I checked out the components and everything was there. The assembly took about 1 pleasant hour, and heaving the beast about by myself was only a moderate pain. I'll know tomorrow morning if I escaped injury.

After assembly, I checked the alignments and adjustments and everything was good enough to use right out of the box. I fired it up and the noise was tolerable without ear protection. No vibration or resonance. The first jointing cut went perfectly. (I stopped, scratched my head and wondered what had I done wrong!) The chip collector worked well enough and I will hook up to my dust control cental vac system for even better performance.

After a short and satisfactory operational trial I took time to carefully inspect the jointer for design and workmanship. First, every machine is a complex compromise of trade-offs including weight, ease of use, reliability, performance and cost. The designer of this machine read my mind and reached the compromises I favor. Yes, he might have added lightness, but the result could have been poor performance, relability and more noise. There is a certain perception of permanence when cast Iron is used as a machine chassis. Its heavy, but it won't vibrate off the table like a sheetmetal framed machine might, and the moving parts stay in alignment. There is ample evidence that the designer of this machine was inventive and clever. I particularly like the fence adjustment and lock mechanism. The inclined infeed table rails are old hat, but are very nicely executed. They operate smoothly and predicably. The one HP rating for the motor is probably more honest than the Amp rating of my shop vac. The motor seems to be perfectly matched to the intent of the machine. I was pleasantly surprised when I started cutting some red oak. It cut quickly and smoothly. I did get hot, but not excessively so. Remember, this is an occasional use machine, not an industrial monster.

The workmanship is excellent. The working surfaces are flat, slick and nicely ground and polished. The other less critical surfaces are rough machined only as required and unmachined cast surfaces are carefully painted. All-in-all, it is a well made machine.

I would have liked to have indicators showing settings of the fence angle and depth of cut. The operator has to set and measure the reference surfaces using other tools independent of the machine. This is an exceptable burden. Besides, most of us don't trust the indicators anyway when we are doing precision work. I'll put my jointer on a rolling stand because I work in a very small garage shop well stuffed with other tools. The weight won't be an issue once the jointer is on wheels.

The price is amazing considering the utility of this bench top jointer. I'll use it for jobs when the table saw cut is too rough for laminating boards, and for edging or trimming cabinet doors and face frame components.

I think it has to be rated five stars. It performs well, looks good and costs a fraction of anything else that is comparable in capacity.

4 out of 5 stars For what it's worth   April 10, 2009
J. W. Riley (Indiana, USA)
I ordered this jointer from Amazon since I was a member of Prime and I wanted a planer/jointer that was decent but not too expensive. I looked at the ratings here and that helped with my decision.
I am a relative newbie to woodworking. My "shop" (in my garage) up to this time had only a drill press and a table saw along with hand tools. I have access to walnut and cherry from a woods and I've been trying to get some small boards (up to 6" wide by 2 ' in length- varying thickness')that were squared- at least on one edge. I could get close with what I had but not nearly close enough. I decided I needed some help.
I got this unit within 3 days in a double-boxed delivery from UPS. The outside had some obvious "dings" in the cardboard but the inside box was fine. I took all the parts out and started to put them together according to the directions. I took the most time getting the fence aligned to 90 degrees. In all, I'd say I took an hour and half to 2 hours getting this unit set up. Once I did, I jointed and planed a couple pieces of walnut. No problems. The unit worked well. I used the trash bag collection for the dust and that worked well too. ( you can either use a trash can or trash bag that you provide along with the hood and outlet that came with the unit)
I downrated the unit because the plastic outlet angle that attaches to the dust outlet nipple was chipped. Still usable but not perfect. The styrofoam packing in the second box was in pieces which speaks to hard handling in shipping or poor quality of styrofoam or both.
All in all, it is a good unit. I'd tentatively give it a "good buy" but I'll get back to this review when I have some more time and wood behind me.
