| Customer Reviews: Excellent value, don't try to save money by buying cheaper November 11, 2009 Scott Jones (Kansas City, MO) I had a very small project and thought I could get by with the cheapest model from the local retail store. Bought a $75 planer that cut rough and burned out after just a few boards.
So with half my project left I sprung for this Makita base model from Amazon. It cuts wood like butter and showered wood shavings like snow. It worked so much quicker than the cheaper model I accidentally cut right down to some screw heads and shattered the blades! Standard blades from the local store fit fine, even though it didn't list my exact model number for compatibility.
All features were as described. Power was great and the cuts were very smooth. Wish I had more boards to plane, this is a great tool.
It's a little difficult to tell what depth the knob is set to, since it's not an 'indexed' height adjustment. But testing on a scrap board would quickly confirm your cut depth for any critical cuts.
Finished planing the remaining boards on my project and even decided to go back and put a smoother finish on some of the boards I had done with the cheap planer.
Wish I could get a Makita blue carrying case for this tool, this model did not come with one. If that's important to you select a model that comes with the case.
Don't try to get by with a power planer for less than $120. Makita has always been a solid brand for me.
perfect planer December 16, 2008 Craig T. Cummings 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is at least the third time I have bought this planer. As a finish carpenter, I use it all the time. My last planer didn't die, I gave it away because after 10 years, I thought I would get a new one. This tool is easy to use and easy to change blades - I plough through old wood, new wood, hard wood, soft wood and an occational nail and it does the job well every time.
