5 out of 5 stars Extremely happy with my Grizzly Jointer!   October 15, 2008

I purchased this machine in July '07 and am completely satisfied with it. I have so many good things to say about it, it would take an hour to write about it and I don't have the time - I use this in conjunction with the Grizzly 0453 15" planer, read my Amazon review on that for full info on both machines.

Suffice to say, this in combination with the planer will make your stock square, true, and flat.

5 out of 5 stars Solid, Flat Surfaces, Powerful   November 17, 2007

I bought this to replace my Jet 6". I visited a Grizzly showroom to see it first-hand before purchasing. I was skeptical about the quality due to the price. I have been using it for 8 months so I can't speak for longevity, but I am very pleased with the performance up to this point. The machine is heavy and well-built and required little set-up other than adjusting the outfeed table level with the knives. This was easily accomplished with a magnetic jig. During assembly you must remove the motor from it's "shipping" location and mount it in its proper location in the base. The base went together quickly and my brother and I were able to easily lift the bed assembly onto the base. All the holes lined up with little effort and, using the built-in caster system which works very well and looks much better than a mobile base, I easily rolled it to it's location. The tables and fence are very flat. I couldn't fit a .002" feeler gage under the straight edge at an given point. The fit and finish is very good overall. The beds and fence surfaces have a highly polished finish, the paint was flawless and the emblem on the base is a step up from decals.
Adjustments are easy. The cams of the parallelogram system give an extremely light and smooth feel to the infeed table during adjustments. Also, coming from handwheels on the Jet, I much prefer the speed of the lever for bed adjustments. Adjusting the fence depth is a bit of a pain due to the weight of the fence - my only gripe about this machine and a minor one at that.
The motor has plenty of power and the increased bed length allows accurate jointing of long stock not to mention the handiness of 8" face jointing, which suits most of my woodworking needs.
I have nothing bad to say about the machine and would recommend it to anyone in the market for an 8" jointer. Regardless of the price, the fit and finish, smooth adjustments, accurate machining and powerful motor make this a machine a solid purchase. Add in the price and its a no-brainer.

4 out of 5 stars Overall very satisfied   October 2, 2007

After a great deal of research I ordered this jointer from Amazon. It arrives about 4 days later on a pallet and was well packed. I was luck that it was shipped by FEDEX ground and the truck had a lift gate. This is a very heavy item and as other have said it is good to have a neighbor help put it together.

I opened the box and sorted all of the parts. That orange grease was all over the bed and it was very easy to remove it with some citrus cleaner. The machine looked great and there was no damage.

It too me about 2 hours to clean it up and put it together. I had to set the beds as there were not completely parallel but this only took 15 minutes or so.

Now the bad part, when I attached the plug and plugged it in the machine started right up. This scared me half to death. Luck for me I did not have a hand close to the cutter head. I tore apart the switch and compared it to the wiring diagram and the factory wire the switch in the open position. That is to say when I twisted the off button to release the safety it automatically closed the circuit and started the machine. This was an easy fix. I called Grizzly the next day and informed them of the situation and they did not seem to think it was a big deal. If you purchase the machine make sure that you keep the bed clear of all items before you plug it in.

After the fixes and adjustments I tested it out on some scrap hard maple that I had around. This thing cuts great. The blades that came with the machine worked well. The fence is very sturdy and locks into position very well. The extra long bed makes jointing long boards a breeze. The machine has plenty of power and never bogged down while I was running about 300 feet of various woods. The built in rollers that allow you to move the machine around work great. It was very easy to shove around the shop with minimum effort.

One other small issue, you must use a dust collector on the machine. After a few minutes the 4" collection slide will plug up and the shavings will start to blow back onto the bed through the cutter head.

If it weren't for the wiring issue I would have given this machine 5 stars. I highly recommend this unit to anyone that does a lot of jointing.

5 out of 5 stars Was what I was hoping for   July 18, 2007

It arrived FAST!

One part of the box was a bit bashed, but it did not hurt anything nor loose anything.

My sons and their two budies got the beast downstairs for me.

Was easy to setup, but the instructions were not all that great. The motor was mounteed to the top, not to the motor bracket, so I had to take it off the top and move it to the bracket. It was obvious once I looked at it a bit, but would have been nice if the instructions mentioned that little fact.

It went together very easily. Adjustment was really easy, but took me a little while because I wanted to make the blades perfect. I had to tweak the tables a little to make them flat to the blade keaper and then parrallel to each other - the table adjustment cams were a cinch to use. I also had to tweak the 90 degree fence lock some too. All adjustments were easy to make and obvious. [NOTE: Do NOT adjust the outfeed table to the height specified in the instructions [0.062 inches i think]!!! Adjust to the height allowed by the blade adjustment guide provided, then adjust the outfdeed to the height of the blades. Someone else said you really need that magnetic blade keeper for that, but I found the blade adjustment tool that came with the unit to be much easier to use, followed by a good tool gauge to adjust the table height to the blade height.]

All the parts were there and all the parts were used!

Had to run off to LOWES buy a wall plug, but that was no big deal.

Plugged it in and it hummed nicely and cuts very well. It does not even notice a deep cut in 8" wide oak.

Great tool and I expect to get many years of service out of it.

Wife came down and said -- That is huge!!

==================================================
Side note -- I got sent out of town the day it was supposed to be delivered. My wife also told them to NOT bring an 18 wheeler and to bring a liftgate truck. Well, the guy shows up with an 18 wheeler and it takes him a while to navigate our narrow street with all the painters trucks and such on the street. So he is a bit "grumpy" when he gets there [my wife's words]. Then he finds out that my wife wants him to move it into the garage and he got really grumpy, but he did it and he got tipped well. Thus, even though the driver is not required to move it, they will....with enough incentive.

4 out of 5 stars Great value but not perfect.   May 28, 2007

First I have to say that you won't find a better company to deal with than Grizzly for efficiency and after sale service. I ordered on Monday and two days later the freight company called to set up delivery the next day. A couple of times I had to call them on other items for parts or questions and they have always been great.

Now, the jointer. It is well worth the price. It's a solid machine and, after minimal adjustment, it is accurate. It is a little clumsy to set up the fence square to the table. The fence/table angle should be checked and adjusted for squareness periodically with a machinist square. That's a good idea with any jointer. This is not my first jointer. I have owned four others and some costing much more than the Grizzly. Therefore, I may be a little over critical considering the price range of the Grizzly.

As for value, this jointer has basically the same jointer bed as the Delta and Steel City parallelograms but with some variations in looks like paint and the stand shape. The Grizzly offers more features however. It comes with a 3 HP motor, mobile base, dust shroud, pedistal switch, 4 knife cutter head and all for almost half the cost of the other two. The Steel City does have these features except that it only has a 2 HP motor and 3 knife cutter head. The Delta is really no competition feature wise but may possibly have a better motor. All are Chinese motors though which, frankly, have a reputation to not last like American motors. I am experiencing some vibration with the motor and V belt. But it works fine and has plenty of power for jointing. I face planed a 7" red oak plank cutting 1/8" deep and it didn't slow down at all and left it smooth as I could ask for. I'd recommend this jointer even if a few years from now I am replacing the motor. Still be bucks ahead.
