Plenty of power, no guts November 10, 2009 Mark Dalzell (Jersey City, NJ)
I purchsed this to replace a very underpowered 2410-22 12v Milwaukee. Worked great... felt fine... the one handed chuck is nice.... and then I tried to drill a hole. I needed to put an anchor into an old red brick wall and in low gear with maximum torque the drill sheared itself to shreds in about 30 seconds. You may argue that I should have used a hammer drill, a more commercial product, that I had a dull bit... whatever. If it had bogged down and stopped I would have agreed. I don't think the motor should be more powerful than the gears... and had I known they were plastic gears I wouldn't have bought it in the first place.
Replaced it with a Hilti SF-151A that was only $40 more and works so well that I've already be requested that I be buried with it.
Carpenter's review November 8, 2009 Garret Holland (Vermont (NEK)) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I will start by saying I no longer own this drill, it was returned to home depot for the makita compact drill - which I will get into a little later...out of the box I was impressed with the power for such a small package, this was short lived. The initial reason I chose this over the makita was because I'm a very satisfied V28 owner, well the reason I like the V28's is the reason I don't like the compact 18v...battery power, the batteries were dying after 8-10 5 inch screws. I understand 5 inch screws take a lot of juice but 8-10? That's pretty much useless for any professional trying to use this tool. I also couldn't bury a screw head deeper than flush which on this particular job I needed them sunk. A combination of the batteries not lasting and less than acceptable torque made me bring it back and grab the makita...
since I myself read these reviews painstakingly when I'm buying something I know you're probably thinking about the makita too so I'll give my two cents here on it... It is hands down the better of the two drills... the torque was great, I could bury screws as deep as I wanted. The drill was a bit lighter - which was another reason I bought the Milwaukee originally (durability) but then when I held the Makita and was working with it appreciated the balance a lot more, the batteries lasted longer but still not acceptable for a professional - I came to the conclusion that these small batteries just aren't up to professional standards yet.. the makita seems to get the power but also dies quickly, although not as fast as the milwaukee.
My conclusion - well I brought that makita back and paid $79 more to get the full size makita 18v the reason being is simple more power and more battery life. For the difference of a pound (3.5 - 4.6) I get a drill that can handle anything I can throw at it and last all day, the battery still charges in about 1/2 hour (the same as the milwaukee compact) The compact drills are good for a home owner that won't put much demand on them, I believe that's about it, if you're a professional looking for a good everyday drill look away from the compacts until they figure out the battery issues. Also if you're a professional or a serious DIYer then 1 lb is not going to hamper your work... in fact I didn't even notice the switch except for the obvious power jump and longer battery life.
I hope this review helps others as theirs have helped me.
Great cordless drill November 3, 2009 John William Gilbert 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have worked in industrial maintenance for 10 years and have mostly used DeWalt stuff. I liked them ok, but for the price, I thought they would hold up better. My new job had the 28v Milwaukee drills and impact. As you would expect, since they are company owned, they take quite a beating. They are several years old and will still smack you in the face if you catch a bit in some metal (much to my coworkers delight)I thought enough of them to buy the 18v set for my own personal use. Great combo pack at the orange box. Drill, sawall, circular saw and light for [...] bucks. 150 less than the DeWalt set. I couldn't be happier. I would like to get the cordless jig saw, but at [...] bucks, I can't see spending that kind of money when a corded version can be had for 100. Overall I highly recommend them for contractors and industrial maintenance.
Missing Belt Hook November 3, 2009 Ronald J. Ugolik (Trumbull, CT USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Received 1st Drill package without Belt Hook. Description clearly states Belt hook is included. Six out of the seven photos show Belt Hook. I complained to Amazon. Said I wanted Belt Hook. Please just send Belt hook. They told me it was a warranty issues and I should contact Milwaukee. I told them I didn't buy the drill from Milwaukee, I bought the Drill from Amazon and it is their responsibility to give me my Belt Hook. The emails Amazon sends can't be responded to. So impossible to have dialog. I told them just to send Belt hook not entire package. Amazon sent another entire Drill Package. Received 2nd Drill package again without Belt Hook. Complained to Amazon again. They never responded. I found a link for Milwaukee parts on Amazon site, bought Belt Hook myself for about $5.00. Why couldn't Amazon do same and just send me my Belt Hook. Never responding to my second complaint is Inexcusable!! Sending emails in response to complaints that can't be responded to is certainly not being the "Customer-Centric" company they claim to be!
O'yea, the drill works great. So my 3 star rating represents 4 stars for the Milwaukee Drill (sorry can't be 5 stars without Belt Hook) and 1 Star for Amazon's poor customer service.
Good tool. September 26, 2009 framer tiz (Richmond VA.) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just bought mine a couple days ago at Home Depot. My NiClad Ryobi 18V was getting old. I do apartment maintenance work and occasional replacing rotten wood work.
Mine didn't come with a belt clip but I do have a drill holster. I miss the bit holder the Ryobi had but I can do w/o. I love the weight and how compact it is compared.
I can't give it a higher rating until I've spent more time with it.
