| Customer Reviews: not what I expected November 11, 2009 Marshall D. Warren 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
thought it was to be a plunge router, from the other review I read. It was not.
Router Review June 27, 2009 Terry Bromfield (albuquerque, nm USA) Nice product for the price, the accessories are nice you don't get a tilting base and easily changed bases in ths price range. It works well.
One major design flaw in plunge base March 24, 2009 Cousin Vinny (Scottsdale, AZ United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this about 1-1/2 years ago for even less money AND with Free Shipping directly from MLCS but I never ever actually used it.
The plunge base is mostly plastic and no matter how tightly the adjusting knobs are turned to secure the angle of the router, the router will still rock slightly while in this base. The design of the adjusting knobs and the base where the top half of it pivots from the bottom half is seriously flawed in my opinion. There is no way to make an accurate and controlled plunge cut with a router that will surely shift back and forth - even only slightly - while it's being moved along in operation. The plastic surfaces simply would not stay snug and true to the vertical.
MLCS tried their best to rectify this but after all was said and done, I simply returned mine for a full and prompt refund from them, no questions asked.
Now, in the time since, perhaps the Chinese manufacturing facility that makes this "Marvel" router has improved the design of the plunge base. If they have, fair enough. This may actually be a fantastic tool for the money. The motor part seems to have heft to it and the fit and finish of it appeared to be nice. Conceptually, it appeared to be a power tool that no woodworker would want to be without and that's what piqued my interest.
Also, I cannot actually speak for this router's power under load, its ease of use, versatility, reliability, etc. since I never used it.
I have the variable speed Bosch Colt (see my review) router/laminate trimmer and it has its own shortcomings as well. But, it's NOT a plunge router as it comes out of the box and it isn't marketed as being one. Ditto for the Porter Cable router/laminate trimmer which I owned and used quite a bit. Both do a good job.
If you're looking for a reliable "no frills" router with an accurate plunge option, you may want to consider the Porter Cable, Makita or Bosch kits that offer decent HP along with both bases as well as the ability to use templates along with guides and inserts. Granted, they're going to be physically larger than the Marvel 40 3-in-1 - but not by all that much - and they'll cost you a bit more, but I believe that the end results will most likely be more consistent and more professional.
I have the original USA-made, pre-Black & Decker, Porter Cable combo kit from several years ago and it's both extremely versatile and a pleasure to use on plunge cuts. Solid, smooth and accurate.
More often than not, you get what you pay for.
Great Tool! You will love this tool! March 14, 2009 J. Morris (Wichita, KS USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I don't normally take time to write reviews. But since I had none to help me make my decision, I decided I would try and help some others. First the packing was great. Literally, it was a tool, inside a plastic case, inside a box, inside a box, inside a box, inside a box. Yes, 4 boxes, and a case. Anyway, I owned the Bosch Colt. Great tool. I used it weekly for about a year. I think it is a very well built tool that will last a long time. Obviously some other jerk thought the same thing since it walked away at a job site. I had plans to replace it but stumbled across this online on MLCS. Did not have any personal reviews to help guide my decision. I looked at all the specs and they were identical to my Bosch. The final deciding factor was all the additional attachments giving much more abilities and uses right out of the box. So I took the chance on this brand and decided to see if I could get a better deal on Amazon. I did, not a major difference in price but it was cheaper. This added with my Amazon Prime account I got it faster and no shipping so if you factor that, it was much cheaper then through MCLS. Once I got it just holding it was impressive. For example, Rigid cordless tools are a great tool, but hold one, then hold a Milwaukee cordless tool. You can just feel the quality. Rigid tools work great and they are in two totally different price ranges, but you can feel the quality difference in the tools. That is the feel of this tool compared to my Bosch. I have had this only a month now but used several times now. The tool itself I think performs just as well as my Bosch did. But considering I got a great quality tool, way cheaper, and with many more accessories (one great thing is the ability to use it as a plunge router), I think I made the correct choice. I have never heard of this brand as far as tools. I have used their bits once or twice but never used the tools before. I will consider their other tools in the future. For now I am happy with this one. The one and only negative I have found so far, is the tool is white. So after only one month, my dirty hands have made this tool not so new looking anymore. But still works great.
