Product Description
This unique book is worth a second set of hands. It offers solo builders and do-it-yourselfers proven tips, techniques, and shortcuts for careful, precise, and safe construction.

There are many times when a helper would make a job easier, and in some cases doable at all, but with John Carroll's clever, expert tips, there's no need to wait for help. This book, the only one of its kind, offers ways to get by with not only one pair of hands but to work more efficiently as well. A perfect example is the problem of bringing a large sheet of plywood up a ladder. Even with a helper this is a difficult and dangerous task. But if a large C-clamp is fastened to one end of the plywood, it's easy to pull the sheet up the ladder from behind.

Professional builders and contractors who work alone or in small crews will find this book full of invaluable ways to keep the work moving, without costly delays or the need to hire additional helpers. Homeowners, who are often faced with working alone, will use these clever techniques to solve common problems safely.

5 out of 5 stars yep, I'll get it   October 27, 2009
Mr. Nomad (Riverside, CA)
I read the negative reviews in their entirety and decided for sure to buy the book. Provide objective feedback if you have it. Otherwise, it reads as sour grapes. I'm taken aback that some professionals fail to extend professional courtesy when commenting on the work of others. Also, the engineer's comments are embarrassing, but certainly are his right to make them. The book is $20. Move on and give it to a friend that might find it helpful.

2 out of 5 stars Best checked out from the Library   October 10, 2009
J. Carlisle (Canton MI)
As a full time Engineer, I was looking for a guide to help me with weekend projects, as I plan to build a large garage/shed in my back yard. Working alone was a bit of a disappointment. There were some valid tips on how to work solo, but a large part of the book was dedicated to measurements and how to calculate the hypotenuse to get things squared. Personally I use a CAD package to draw up plans for my jobs which gives me all the angles and diagonal distances I need. Perhaps I am just used to do fancier math than Hypotenuse = square root of ( opposite squared + adjacent squared) . It seemed to me that the target audience was professional builders / contractors that had always worked on teams, and were now looking at branching out on their own. Not for do it yourself-ers who were looking to learn solo building tips. My personal recommendation is to check this book out from your local library so you can learn the "Solo Tips" but don't buy it to keep as a how to reference manual.

5 out of 5 stars Working Alone   July 14, 2009
David L. Blados (Richmond)
This book is needed for anyone having to work alone on a job in the construction field. It is very comprensive and complete in respect to what can be done in certain job situations. This book is full of great ideas and techniques useful in working by yourself. I have used many of the techniques on previous tasks and may use others on opportunities as needed. I have enjoyed this book and is a welcome addition to my library.

5 out of 5 stars Save some pain   July 11, 2009
B. Carter
Like some other reviewers here I've got a fair bit(15 years) of building experience, much of it working alone.I 'invented' some of the ideas in this book for myself and I remember the pain that forged such revelations. Carrol can save you much of it-just absorb his methods and reasoning and you have already jumped ahead years on the learning curve.I love geometrry and had no problem with that part of building, but I was impressed by how simple and straightforward he is in presenting the calculations for basic problems.

5 out of 5 stars very nice   May 16, 2009

lots of good ideas that i will be using, i enjoyed this book and showed it to other people in the trades who also were impressed by some of the techniques,Because most people in the trades never work completly alone a lot of professionals dont know these ideas. however; John if you are reading this i would like to have this available for my kindle.
