Nothing like MasterCook, I don't like this program November 16, 2009 Katydid (NC) I used MasterCook for years until it no longer would run on Mac's OS. So I got MacGourmet because everyone said it was as good as MasterCook. Well, it is not. It's cumbersome and doesn't do anything as well as MasterCook. If you have never used MasterCook you may not be disappointed with MacGourmet because you won't realize what a truly good recipe software program is like. Very disappointed. I'm only giving it one star because there is no way to give it No Stars.
fun program November 2, 2009 small business owner (KC, MO) Bought it to start collecting family recipes. lt's an easy program if you want to input recipes and be able to share them. You can publish the recipes into a book along with notes and pictures. You can also publish to the web. The print out looks great and it has a nifty easy read feature if you are reading directly from the screen while cooking.
Nutritional Calculations are Wrong October 5, 2009 S. M. Jefferies (Tampa, FL United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I haven't found anything good to say about this program yet. First, there weren't any installation instructions in the box, on the box or on the screen when I inserted the disk. I installed it incorrectly and it would only run off of the disk. So, I had to email Mariner Software for help, and wait 2 days for the instructions to be emailed back. Once I got it installed correctly, I found that entering my own recipes were easy, but getting the nutritional info was a chore. It didn't recognize common ingredients like "strawberry jam" and "oatmeal". I had to hunt through a list of items to find the closest match. But once I found the right items, the nutritional info didn't match the nutritional labels for the brands I use. You can add your own items to the list, and but it won't let you input the vitamin and mineral info like the preinstalled items have. The main reason I bought this program is for the nutritional calculator, but if it's incorrect, then all it's good for is a recipe box. There's a 30 day money back guarantee printed on the box, and I'm seriously considering returning it.
Update: I decided to give this program a 2nd chance before sending it back. I tried inputting my own nutritional info for some brands I use. I started with whole grain brown rice and I input everything exactly as it is on the nutritional label. But for some reason every time I tried using this item in a recipe, it tripled the calories even though the recipe was for one serving. I experimented with several other ingredients and the same thing happened again and again. I just wanted a simple program that I could use to input my recipes and let it calculate the nutrition so I wouldn't have to tally it up myself. But apparently you need to be a genius to get this program to do it.
Semi-difficult to use August 1, 2009 Robert W. Schmidt 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
We are long-time users of the MacGourmet program. Once it's up and running, it's an awesome addition to any kitchen. We ordered the 'deluxe' addition upgrade from the Macgourmet website ([...]).
However, be prepared to possibly poke around when you've installed this. We ALWAYS seem to have difficulty in importing/exporting recipe libraries. When we downloaded/installed the 'deluxe' upgrade, it seemed to render our earlier version inoperable. We simply wanted to install the upgrade and be able to view our existing recipe library - for some reason (we're working on it), it can't find our existing library. This type of thing is usually a 'head-banger' and simply shouldn't be. Then again, maybe it's something we're doing wrong - that said, we don't seem to have this type of difficulty with other program updates.
Seems to me that if you purchase an upgrade, it's safe to assume that you've already created a recipe library. This upgrade asks where we want to create our library INSTEAD OF 'would you like to use your existing recipe library'. Come on MarinerSoftware, make this a bit easier to use...
Not so advanced... March 27, 2009 L. Chatham (Woodstock, NY) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was really hoping this program was going to work for me. There are are so few recipe management software options for the Mac user.
I was very disappointed to find the recipe import feature was only available for [...], williams-sonoma, and a few others. The only way for me to add recipes from my favorite food blog or the NY Times is to input them manually.
My other disappointment is the shopping list. While it's great that there is an easy option to create a shopping list, it's frustrating that the items on the list are in alphabetical order rather than ordered by category. It doesn't make a shopping trip very organized.
