Design Ideas abound September 1, 2009 G. Strout (Chula vista, CA United States) Purchased the book primarily to help brainstorm design ideas for different spaces. The book abounds with pictures and images of a variety creative, artful and visually appealing designs for a variety of climates. That is, there are pictures of nicely layed out small spaces and large spaces for Southwest (dry and hot) or Northeast (wet and cold) climates. Not as much for the Southwest as I would have preferred, but overall, no complaints. Includes useful comments, consistent color themes, dramatic colors, interesting examples of accessories. There are visually appealing spaces with minimal plants (think low maintenance) and small spaces with stacks of potted plants for you high maintenance lovers who are really into your plants.
Worked for me.

Some good, timeless ideas June 17, 2009 M. Johnson (Fargo, ND USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have recently become a big fan of the "Idea Book" series from Taunton. This one is no exception with plenty of ideas that cover every gamut of the back yard. Although this book is pushing 5 years old, luckily this subject matter is less susceptible to trends and fads, so the images and ideas are timeless.
I recommend this to anyone that is looking for some ideas, whether it's sprucing up a zone, or small area, to the entire backyard. Only complaint is that there are a few over the top, million dollar mansion photos that just don't seem to fit with the subject. When you start measuring your backyard in acres...well then that's just a different story.

This has been a wonderful book that I have enjoyed savoring. There are diagrams to be used as tools that are impressive, all surrounded by fabulous pictures of realistic projects. Laypeople as well as professional builders can all benefit from the beauty of this book.
