Product Description
Papilio, French for "butterfly", produces flowers that actually appear capable of fluttering away. The most famous of the exotic amaryllis, Papilio makes an amazing houseplant, growing larger as the seasons pass with the addition of smaller side bulbs. Snowy petals with maroon brushings and stripes, tinged with lime green. Flowers are 6" across and numerous. Truly a winged wonder.

Hippeastrum papilio, the 'butterfly amaryllis' is not the easiest bulb to grow, but it will be well worth the effort. My experience has been that these bulbs are not likely to bloom for 1 or two years, but when they do it is worth the wait. Both of my bulbs did not bloom until the bulb had produced two offsets-I repotted then, and there are currently 8 offsets around the 'mother' bulb, and at least two of them bloom every year. They seem to prefer being slightly potbound. Plant with 2/3 of bulb above ground and do not overwater-water sparingly for 2-3 months, stressing them slightly(they do not require a full 'dormant' period as most hybrids do), and then water reqularly but do not let stay soggy. Bright indirect light, or shade outside, is best, direct unfiltered sun will sunburn the leaves. Not winter hardy-bring in well before frost. You should be able to get them to bloom every year-mine have bloomed every year for 12 years.
